چکیده
Real Wage Cyclicality in Germany and the UK: New Results Using Panel Data This paper compares the cyclical behaviour of male real wages in Germany and the UK using the German Socio-Economic Panel 1984-2002 and the British Household Panel Survey 1991-2004. We distinguish between job stayers (remaining in the same job), and withinand between-company job movers. Stayers are the large majority in both countries. Using changes in the unemployment rate as the cyclical measure, we find real wages of stayers in the private sector in West Germany – but not East Germany – to be procyclical, and quite sensitive to unemployment, comparable to the US and the UK. We find cyclicality in the public sector in neither country. Thus real wage flexibility is similar in the two countries, apart from East Germany, despite apparent differences in wage-setting institutions. JEL Classification: E32, J31, K31

Real Wage Cyclicality of Job Stayers, Within-Company Job Movers, and Between-Company Job Movers
Real Wage Cyclicality of Job Stayers, Within-Company Job Movers, and Between-Company Job Movers Using the British New Earnings Survey Panel Data (NESPD) for the period 1975 to 2001 we estimate the wage cyclicality of job stayers (those remaining within single jobs in a given company), within company job movers, and between company job movers. We also examine how the proportion of internal and e...

Heterogeneity in Real Wage Cyclicality This paper presents evidence that real wage cyclicality can be a particularly heterogeneous parameter, depending on different worker characteristics and also on the specific stage of the business cycle. Using matched employer-employee panel data for Portugal covering the period 1986-2004, real wages are shown to be considerably more procyclical during rece...

We find stayers in Northern Italy to have high cyclicality of real wages, higher in fact than the US ...
متن کاملReal wage cyclicality and the Great Depression: evidence from British engineering and metal working firms
Based on firm‐level payroll data from around 2000 member firms of the British Engineering Employers' Federation we examine the behavior of real hourly earnings over the 1927‐1937 cycle that contained the Great Depression. The pay statistics are based on adult male blue‐collar workers within engineering and metal working firms. They allow us to distinguish between pieceworkers and timeworkers an...
متن کاملNew Evidence on Real Wage Cyclicality within Employer-employee Matches
In the most thorough study to date on wage cyclicality among job stayers, Devereux’s (2002) analysis of men in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics produced two puzzling findings: (1) the real wages of salaried workers are noncyclical, and (2) wage cyclicality among hourly workers differs between two alternative wage measures. We examine these puzzles with additional evidence from other sources. ...
